Inver Hills Community College will celebrate Veterans Week Nov. 6-12 by highlighting personal stories of veterans both in film and in person.

The public is invited to attend any of the scheduled events at no cost.

On Tuesday, Nov. 6, the college will host two showings of “Wartorn: 1861-2010,” at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. The HBO film is a dramatic presentation of a condition known by different names at different times: hysteria, melancholia and insanity, shell-shock, combat fatigue and, most recently, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Discussion will follow both presentations.

The film will be shown in the Green Room of the College Center.

On Thursday, Nov. 8, the Black Student Union will host a panel of veteran speakers who fought in historical conflicts, including World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan. This special presentation offers participants the chance to hear reflections and historical context from people who were there.

It begins at 11:30 a.m. and is also being held in the Green Room of the College Center.

On Monday, Nov. 12—Veterans Day—State Representative and Staff Sgt. John Kriesel will present his story, “Still Standing.” Rep. Kriesel lost his legs and two friends in a 2006 roadside bomb attack in Fallujah, Iraq.  

Join Inver Hills students, staff and faculty for this presentation at Dakota County Technical College in Rosemount. The presentation will be held at 7 p.m. in the Dakota Room.

Other events, displays and activities on the Inver Hills campus include the Honor Wall—an opportunity to express support for veteran students—and Thought Spot—chalk boards dedicated to veteran-related reflections.

The Inver Hills Library also will sponsor a display of veteran-friendly books and movies.
