After playing the first half to a 0-0 draw, the Simley boys soccer team gave up three goals in the second half to drop the Section 4A final to Como Park Thursday afternoon.

The first half was a back-and-forth affair that saw both squads squander legitimate scoring chances but play smart, solid defense.

The Cougars' scoring began with less than six minutes gone in the second half. Como Park senior and team leading scorer Abdurazak Omar got free at the top of the Spartan 18-yard box and made a routine finish to put the Cougars ahead 1-0.

Unfortunately for the Spartans, it was all that would be needed.

Nine minutes later the Cougars hit the Simley goal post and the ricochet provided a great scoring opportunity but senior Spartan goalkeeper Nathan Spores was equal to the task.

Miscommunication and a defensive miscue in the back third put the Cougars ahead 2-0 with 20:03 to play.

Sixteen seconds later an awestruck Spartan defense failed to challenge an Omar run and gave up a second goal to the clever scorer and put the Cougars ahead 3-0 with 19:47 to play.

The Spartans outplayed the Cougars in the final 15 minutes of the match but were unable to generate any goals.

The Cougars' first round opponent in the Class A State Tournament has yet to be decided.

Simley has arguably the best goalie in the State, that being Nathan Spores. Injuries really hurt this team late in the season, but they made a great run in sectionals. Hats off to all the Seniors on the team!!

This final playoff game and this season are great examples of this team's determination and teamwork! These boys (young men) worked hard and supported other. Each of them gave their all to the team. I have watched many of them play together over the years, and am proud of the athletes and sportsmen they have become. I feel badly for all of our players that were injured....and wish them all a speedy and complete recovery. Ditto.....Nathan had a spectacular senior year! I will truly miss watching this team of seniors.....and wish them all the very best as they pursue their futures!
