Simley to Induct Five into Hall of Fame on Friday

Jane Newton-O'Neil, Eric Rud, Jason Stewart, Curt Friemann and Lanre Akintujoye will all become Simley High School Hall of Fame inductees at a special ceremony tomorrow.

Five former students will become the latest Simley Hall of Fame inductees on Friday, when the hosts a special induction ceremony as part of its 2011 Homecoming week.

The inductees include:

  • Jason Stewart
During his tenure at Simley, Stewart distinguished himself in football, hockey and baseball, racking up a series of All-State and All-Conference honors and captaining both the football and hockey squads. After graduating from St. Cloud State University, Stewart was drafted onto the New York Islanders hockey team in 1994 and spent three years in the minor leagues.
  • Jane Newton
A captain of the girls swim team, Newton held the state record for the 100 breaststroke, was a two-time state champion and qualified for the national championships. She was also the first Simley girls swimmer to receive All-State honors. Newton went on to the University of Minnesota medical school.
  • Eric Rud
At Simley, Rud distinguished himself on the ice and on the baseball field, before pursuing a distinguished hockey career with Colorado College. At Colorado, Rud garnered a number of honors, including the WCHA Defenseman of the Year in 1996 and 1997. Rud, who now coaches at Colorado College, was also a member of the 1997 USA Hockey World University Championship Team.
  • Lanre Akintujoye
Akintujoye, a Simley graduate, went on to earn a bachelor's degree in the history of science and medicine from Yale University. But that was just the beginning for Akintujoye, who also obtained a master's degree in public health and health management and earned a Winston Health Policy Scholarship from the Association of University Programs in Health Administration.
  • Curt Friemann
A 1984 graduate, Friemann earned Most Valuable Player honors on both the football and basketball teams during his career at Simley. He is also the current 400 meter state record holder for track. Friemann went on to Concordia University in St. Paul, where he had the third-highest three-point shot percentage for Division III basketball and was the U.S. National Collegiate Award Winner for basketball.
