Top-ranked Simley Wrestlers Roll Over Visiting Henry Sibley

The Spartans won their 10th straight Classic Suburban Conference wrestling title after a 51-15 dual meet victory over the visiting Warriors

Top-ranked Simley High School won 11 of 14 matches over visiting Henry Sibley High School to claim its 10th consecutive Classic Suburban Conference wrestling crown Friday.

Simley, the three-time defending Class AA state champion, outmuscled a good Henry Sibley squad 51-15 in the matchup at Inver Grove Heights. The Spartans dominated the lower weights, rolling to a 22-0 lead after the first four matches.

“I thought we wrestled really well,” said Simley coach Will Short. “Henry Sibley is a good team and they were good competition. “Our kids’ goal was to win a conference championship and they did that. This is our 10th in a row.”

Simley sophomore Juan Torres scored a technical fall over Sibley’s Garrett Beaman at 112 pounds and Nick Wanzek beat Sibley’s Rashad Kennedy at 145 to highlight the individual wins for the Spartans.

Other Simley winners were sophomore Kyle Gliva at 103 pounds, junior Pedro DeLao at 119, senior Cola Jensen at 125, sophomore Jake Short at 140, senior Dan Dick at 152, top-ranked junior Micah Barnes at 160, senior Joe Rief at 171, junior Cody Hazlett at 189 and junior Mykar Groves at 215.

Dick won at 8-2 at 152 pounds despite suffering a reoccurrence of painful knee injury that hobbled him in the second and third periods. Dick rolled to a 7-1 lead after one period and then limped home mostly on guts.

“I thought it went well [early] and up until that point [of re-injury] I had it,” said Dick.

“It’s his senior year and he wanted to wrestle,” said coach Short. “His goal is to win a state title and he’s working hard.”

Groves shook off fatigue in the first two rounds to top Sibley’s Myles Evans 9-1 in a match that only warmed up in the third period.

“I felt kind of lazy out there today,” said Groves, who along with most of the rest of the Spartans wrestled in a triangular meet at home Thursday night. “I finally was able to dig down deep for the team."

Torres, ranked first at the 103-pound weight class by wrestling website www.theguillotine.com, dominated his match against Henry Sibley wrestler Garrett Beaman at 112-pound weight class. Against his opponent, he racked up three takedowns and a near fall in the first period before cruising to a 20-2, technical fall victory.

Wanzek got rolling in the second period against Kennedy after a scoreless first period. Kennedy failed to wrestle aggressively and earned three cautions in the second period while Wanzek built a 6-0 lead. Wanzek went on to win the match 9-1.

Simley is now 18-2 on the season, and is ranked fifth in the nation by www.hswrestling.net. Its only losses came at the hands of top-ranked Apple Valley and Brandon, Fla. in "The Clash" tournament in Rochester earlier this year.

Simley hosts Hudson, Wis., in another dual meet on Thursday. The junior varsity team starts at 6pm, followed by the varsity at 7:30 p.m.
