Current Minnesota law prevents school districts from starting classes before Labor Day, except for the Minneapolis school district. This issue is a hot topic for school officials, parents, the tourism industry and the State Fair, as reflected in frequent editorials.
As the 2012-13 school year kicks off, I am interested in getting feedback from anyone who wishes to weigh in on this issue. Please post a comment below, take my survey at www.facebook.com/State.Rep.Joe.Atkins, or just send me an email at Rep.Joe.Atkins@house.mn. Thank you!

Thanks for weighing in, Pork Chop Guy. I got the same opinion from somebody calling himself "Pronto Pup Guy" when I was at the State Fair. Are you two related? :)

I grew up in Iowa where we always started before Labor Day and it sure was nicer getting out earlier! But as a parent it is nice to have the whole month of August without school starting. I think school districts should be able to have the option.

I like that idea Julie. I guess I don't see why it would be a big deal for each district to determine their own start date rather than having a state mandate.

It just screws up the last family time of summer staring sooner...leave it alone, after labor day is good.
Now onto something meaningful.....
