Eagan's Catco to Close, Eyes New Facility in Inver Grove Heights

The IGH planning commission approved unanimously the state-of-the-art facility that would bring jobs and business to the city.

The Inver Grove Heights planning commission voted unanimously Tuesday night to recommend a state-of-the-art Catco Parts & Service facility on Clark Road, between highways 52 and 55.  Catco—which supplies truck repair and parts for commercial vehicles—is planning to close its Eagan outfit and, if approved, build a 37,000-square-foot facility in Inver Grove Heights.   "I am familiar with the company and I have a lot of respect for them. I think they'd be a good fit there," planning commission chairman Tom Barthlomew said. With full endorsement from the planning commission, the Catco application is now scheduled to be heard by the city council on June 11. In a "white ballot" vote, the Commission simultaneously amended a zoning restriction to …

City Considering Firearms Safety Class Inside IGH

The course—if approved—would be taught by DNR 2nd Lieutenant Alex Gutierrez.

The City of Inver Grove Heights is considering allowing DNR 2nd Lieutenant Alex Gutierrez to conduct a firearms safety training course inside city limits. To bring the training to fruition, however, the City Council must first approve the amendment of a public ordinance prohibiting the discharge of a firearm inside Inver Grove Heights.  Inver Grove Heights resident Vance Grannis, Sr.—father of city councilman 'Chip' Grannis—contacted Gutierrez and volunteered to host the training on a portion of his property. Gutierrez explained to councilors Monday night that the training would be open to everyone and would be a "controlled environment with certified firearms safety instructors on site."   Gutierrez also said the classes would be limited …

Some of you have mentioned that you've taken your sons/daughters to firearms safety training elsewhere. I'm wondering if there is an age limit for kids interested? Should a 10-year-old be allowed to use a firearm? 12? 8? I am personally not real familiar with this issue and I'm curious. Thanks! Jeff   more ›

Inver Hills Pioneers FAIM Tuition Assistance Program

At least 75 Inver Hills students will be supported in the FAIM program during the 2011-12 academic year.

Inver Hills Community College has become the first college in Minnesota to offer its students the Family Assets for Independence Minnesota (FAIM) tuition assistance program. When combined with financial aid assistance programs, FAIM allows students the opportunity to graduate from college with little to no debt. According to a release from Inver Hills, for every $1 a FAIM participant saves into a special savings account, a federal match contributes an additional $1.50 and the Inver Hills Foundation does the same, providing a total of $3 for every $1 saved. After two years—and a maximum of $960 contributed by the participant—the participant would have $3,840 in college tuition funds. "Far too many of our students need to withdraw from a …

Washington Post: Second Congressional District 'Surprisingly Competitive'

The fate of the U.S. House of Representatives rests on a few battleground districts, including Minnesota's Second Congressional District, according to the Post.

Rep. John Kline's (R) race against Democratic challenger Mike Obermueller has caught the eye of the Washington Post. Minnesota's Second Congressional District may be "surprisingly competitive" this year, according to a May 11 article in the Post highlighting battleground districts across the country. Kline "drew the short straw" in redistricting, the Post said, and faces tighter re-election chances. The Post also cited the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee's decision to provide support to Obermueller through its Red to Blue Emerging Races program as a factor. Kline, a five-term incumbent, has for years won re-election by double-digit margins in the congressional district.

Stairs For Rock Island Swing Bridge Approved ... Narrowly

Despite being one of the first issues on Monday night's agenda, the Rock Island Swing Bridge stairs proved to be one of the most contentious.

The Inver Grove Heights city council narrowly approved building a set of stairs for the Rock Island Swing Bridge at Monday night's council meeting.  One of the first issues on the agenda, the Swing Bridge stairs proved to be one of the most contentious, garnering 'Yes' votes from only Mayor Tourville and councilors Piekarski-Krech and Madden. The council awarded the building contract to St. Louis Park-based Tree Trust, a nonprofit landscaping company that partners with youth programs to keep costs low. One exchange between Parks & Recreation Director Eric Carlson and councilman Bill Klein demonstrated the tension in the room.  "Personally I'm not wild about these stairs at all," Klein said. "I would rather have seen a trail to a scenic …
