Extra! Extra! Inver Grove Township Debates Town Hall

An age-old tussle over a new town hall sounds familiar to modern ears.

Feb. 28, 1930: A proposal to build a new town hall in Inver Grove Township surfaced when local farmer Fred Schussler offered up an acre of land for the project in the southwest corner of the city.

The time was right for the $5,000 project to replace the old town hall, described in the West St. Paul Booster and Dakota County Globe as "Out of keeping ... with the trend of modern ideas," due to its oil lamps and wood stove.

The introduction of incandescent light bulbs to the commercial market happened at the end of the 1800s.

However, the location was not quite right for the council, and the resolution was voted down March 11 over concerns that it was too far away from the 500 voters that live in the village.
