10am to noon on Saturday at the Rock Island Swing Bridge Pier in Inver Grove Heights.
Why Go: The city's $2.4 million restoration of the Rock Island Swing Bridge — now a fishing pier — is complete. And city officials are inviting you to come view the results. Inver Grove Heights Parks and Recreation Department staff will be on hand to discuss the project. As a part of the festivities, the city will also highlight the new Mississippi River Regional Trail with some information on biking and bike commuting, and city and county trail maps.
    Cost: Free
  • Summer Concert Series: The Eddies on the River
    When/Where:
7 to 8:30pm on Friday at the Ampitheater at 365 Marie Avenue W. in West St. Paul.
Why Go: There is nothing like watching live music on a warm summer evening with Dodge's beautiful prairie and the sunset as a backdrop. The Summer Concert Series is free and open to all ages. Gather the family and bring a picnic or purchase our refreshments such as ice cream cones, root beer floats, or popcorn. Back by popular demand, The Eddies on the River will once again bring their "river ballads" to the nature center to kick off the Summer Concert Series.
    Cost: Free

  • When/Where:
10am to 5pm on Friday at Fort Snelling
Why Go: Travel back to the 1940s to learn about Fort Snelling and Minnesota’s role on battlefields and at home during World War II. Costumed staff, artifact displays, weapon firing demonstrations, a 1940s-style radio show, authentic vehicles and reenactors from across the region occupy the historic fort during this special weekend devoted to Minnesota's Greatest Generation. Visitors can participate in many hands-on activities for families including crafts, games and an obstacle course.
Cost: $10 adults, $8 seniors and college students, $5 children ages 6-17; free for children age 5 and under and Minnesota Historical Society members.
