Patch Picks: Celebrate Memorial Day Weekend
It's the first big weekend of the summer — here are a few suggestions for ways to enjoy it.
Military History Weekend at Fort Snelling
Historic Fort Snelling opens for the season with a special weekend of programming featuring the timeline of military history in Minnesota, hearth cooking demonstrations, musket firing demonstrations and more. A great event for the entire family. The event runs from 10am to 5pm on Saturday and noon to 5pm on Sunday.
The Grove Aquatic and Fitness Center
It's always perfect swimming weather at the Grove, which features two indoor water slides, a whirlpool and more. (Note: the lap pool and dive pool will be closed for maintenance over Memorial Day weekend). For less than $20 per family, you can enjoy a day at the pool. Hours are noon- 6:30pm on Saturday and Sunday. The Community Center is closed on Monday in observance of Memorial Day.
Party on the Patio at Gertens on May 29
Enjoy free grilled pizza from Bellatoria, demonstrations from Rockwood Outdoor Living Room on fireplaces and bars for your patio, complimentary lemonade, music and prizes. Do a little shopping for your garden, too. 9am to 3pm on Saturday, May 29 at Gertens, 5500 Blaine Avenue.

Take a Hike at Lebanon Hills
Grab your hiking shoes, pack a picnic and head to Lebanon Hills Regional Park, located between Eagan and Apple Valley. Bike trails, picnic shelters, Schulze Beach and much more. The campgrounds are full for the weekend, but maybe you can scope them out for another time. The Visitor Center is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. each day and will be open on Memorial Day.
Big Movie Weekend at AMC Showplace
Just in case it's not perfect picnic weather, check out the hot new summer releases at AMC Showplace 16: For the grown-ups, there is "The Hangover, Part 2" while kids have "Kung Fu Panda 2," another sequel that may be more to their liking. Or see the recently released "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" with Johnny Depp. Open Memorial Day.
