VIDEO: Learning to Read, With the Help of a Four-legged Friend

Children practiced their reading skills on Thursday with a pair of canine companions at Inver Glen Library's "Wagging Tails" reading program.

Who said dogs aren't good listeners?

Certainly not Kindergartner Ashleigh Skappel, who practiced her reading skills at Inver Glen Library on Saturday in front of a Kujo, a certified therapy dog.

Kujo was one of two therapy dogs at Inver Glen on Saturday as part of the library's Wagging Tails program. Attentive and polite, Kujo wagged his tail supportively while Skappel sounded out her vowels and consonants.

The idea behind the program is simple, according to Beth Beltz, Kujo's owner.

"Sometimes children who have problems reading or aren't real confident reading out loud have no problems reading to a dog, and they don't feel as self-conscious," Beltz pointed out.
