Bites Nearby: Old World Pizza

Customers from far and wide call Old World Pizza in Inver Grove Heights one of the best places for pizza in the Twin Cities.

Longtime Old World Pizza fan Jill Kerr of Eagan says she knows a good pizza from a bad one without even tasting it.

“You can tell from the way it looks and smells when they first set it down on the table,” Kerr said. “And the way the cheese pulls apart.”

Kerr’s pizza judging may be a bit unorthodox, but her vote for Old World Pizza as one of the best has lots of company. Pizza connoisseurs regularly rank Old World Pizza as one of the best in the Twin Cities. The shop regularly finishes among the top contenders for best pie in survey after survey.

Old World Pizza offers tasty pies in thin, medium and thick crusts, with mostly traditional toppings. But the crust, cheese, sauce and generous toppings are all done right, and each compliments the other. Some pizzerias may claim to better crust or sauce, some may have more cheese or more toppings, Kerr said, but none have as perfect a combination as Old World Pizza does.

And speaking of combinations, the Top of the Line pizza with sausage, pepperoni, mushrooms, green peppers, onions, bacon bits and optional sauerkraut is a must try. There are eight other specialty combinations, including a vegetarian option, the popular macaroni and cheese and a BLT pizza, or dinners can create their own concoction.

The dough, sauce and sausage are all handmade on the premises.

Old World Pizza started life as Pizza Factory in South Saint Paul and operated there from more than 30 years before owner Brian Dzieweczynski moved his establishment Inver Grove Heights. And Inver Grove Heights residents are grateful.

The shop draws customers from far and wide. The lunch buffet with pizza, pasta and salad is especially popular and seating is sometimes scarce.

Pizza is available for delivery, dine-in or carry out for lunch and dinner.

Unlike some downtown pizza places, the décor at Old World Pizza is bright, cheery and clean.
