Get Out: Weekend Events in and around Inver Grove Heights

Looking for things to do this weekend? Check out some of these ideas.

  • Minnesota State Fair
    When/Where?
    The Minnesota State Fair runs from Thursday, Aug. 25, to Monday, Sept. 5.  Hours vary depending on building/exhibit—check the online schedule here:  http://www.mnstatefair.org/general_info/hours.html. The fairgrounds in St. Paul are open from 6 a.m. to midnight (10 p.m. on Labor Day), and guests can enter the outside gates from 6 a.m. until 10 p.m. (9 p.m. on Labor Day).
    Why Go? 
    It’s one of the nation’s largest and best-attended state fairs, showcasing the Minnesota’s finest agriculture, art and industry in an entertaining and fun atmosphere lasting 12 days. The “Great State Get-Together” offers tons of things to do— including live concerts, competitions and contests, exhibitions, Midway rides and games, unique events and legendary food items.
    Price:
      Regular admission at the gate is $12 for adults 13-64 years of age, $10 for seniors 65 and over, $10 for children ages 5-12, and free for children under 5. Check online at http://www.mnstatefair.org/tickets_discounts/admission.html for promotional days and other ticket information.
  • Egyptian Festival
    When/Where?
    11 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 27, to Sunday, Aug. 28, at St. Mary’s Coptic Orthodox Church of Minnesota.
    Why Go?
      St. Mary’s Coptic Orthodox Church of Minnesota shares their Coptic (Egyptian) Christian heritage and culture with you at their sixth annual festival—which will include presentations on current events in Egypt. You’ll gain an Egyptian-Christian perspective on the Jan. 25 revolution, and what preceded and followed it. The event will have a cultural program with movies, slide presentations, church tours, church choir music and exhibits. Bakery items and other Egyptian food will be for sale, as well as books, artifacts and jewelry. There will also be fun activities for children.

  • Inver Grove Heights City-Wide Garage Sale
    When/Where?
    Various times, Thursday, Aug. 25, to Saturday, Aug. 27, at numerous locations throughout Inver Grove Heights.  Maps are available at , , , and the Corner Store beginning Aug. 22.
    Why Go?
    You’ll find all kinds of hidden treasures at numerous garage sales throughout town at this early Inver Grove Heights Days event. Proceeds from this garage sale weekend will support Inver Grove Heights Days. (Note: All other Inver Grove Heights Days events are scheduled for Sept. 8-11.)

    Varies, depending on what you find.
  • Monarchs of Minnesota
    When/Where?
      2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 28, at the Lebanon Hills Visitor Center Discovery Room, Lebanon Hills Regional Park, 860 Cliff Road in Eagan.
    Why Go?
    You’ll learn about Minnesota’s state butterfly, the marvelous Monarch. Join a naturalist while you look for monarch butterflies to tag as part of a national research project, tracking their migration. Equipment will be provided. This is for participants ages 5 and older, and an adult must accompany youth under 18 years of age.

  • Harvest of Art Show
    When/Where?
      1 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 28, at the Eagan
    Art House, 3981 Lexington Ave. S. in Eagan.
    Why Go?
    The Eagan Art House hosts an afternoon of art including the opening of its annual community art exhibit, outdoor pottery firing, pottery sale, artist trading card station, artist demonstrations and more. Ring Mountain Ice Cream will also be available for purchase.
