Inver Grove Heights Week in Review Aug. 1-7

Patch looks back on the events, people and issues that made the headlines last week.

On Monday, , jail time and a fine for threatening to kill two Inver Grove Heights police officers and their families. According to a criminal complaint, Direasa Mae Rassman threatened also dealt roughly $1,000 in damage to the interior of a police car by kicking the bars and windows of the back seat.

Youth Hockey players from Inver Grove Heights had a earlier this summer. A group of players between the ages of 10 to 14 attended camp on the campus of the University of Minnesota Duluth, home of the 2011 NCAA national champion Bulldogs. The camp included a visit from UMD head coach Scott Sandelin.

Tarek ibn Ziyad Academy was in the news twice this week. , when the school board decided not to appeal a state decision that led to the school's shutdown, and , when its bankruptcy attorney said the charter school is still looking for ways to remain in operation.

Patch , who has for 15 years taught classes through the city to beginner and advanced students. Gardner hopes his classes foster discipline, respect for others and compassion.

The filing period is now open for fall elections to the Inver Grove Heights School Board. So far this week, only current board chair Mickey Difronzo has filed for one of four open spots on the board. The filing period ends on Aug. 16.
