Inver Grove Heights Week in Review Aug. 22-28

Patch looks back on the events, people and issues that made the headlines last week.

On Monday, Patch brought you the , a lifelong bartender who has worked at Drkulas for 40 years. In that time his name has become nearly as much of an institution as the bar itself, and has a burger and beer named in his honor.

The Inver Grove Heights City Council during a budget work session on Monday. City officials cut a proposed assistant fire chief position from the department's budget to save $104,000, but fire officials want the position back.

Another Inver Grove Heights resident has died in a tragic accident, following the accident electrocution of an Inver Grove Heights businessman last week. Timothy Francis Anderson, 42, died after his boat capsized on a Wisconson lake last Saturday.

Inver Grove Heights hockey player was the subject of a Patch profile this week. LaShomb found out last week that she'd made the Team USA U18 hockey squad.

A bevy of local and state officials, including Gov. Mark Dayton, gathered Tuesday afternoon at Inver Hills Community College to induct 11 area cities and the college itself into the national Beyond the Yellow Ribbon program. , Dayton spoke on behalf of the program, which connects community leaders and organizations in order to provide support to military veterans and their families.

After initially saying he would withhold payments during the government shutdown this summer, . All total, Atkins will donate $1,500, a figure which includes his deferred back pay and some of his own cash.

Patch closed out the work week on Friday with , including Darion Fletcher, Margie Freed, Max Wellens, Emma Russ and Joe Trenzeluk. All five are expected to be leaders for their respective sports teams this year.

Phil Prokopowicz, a nine-year veteran of the board, , after more than two full terms on the board. Prokopowicz' decision was in part prompted by the fact that all of his four children have now graduated from district schools. But the school board’s most experienced member also says that he has accomplished much of what he originally set out to do.
