Inver Grove Heights Week in Review June 6-12

Patch looks back on the events, people and issues that made the headlines last week.

School District 199 officials are on the statewide Minnesota Comprehensive Assessment results, which were released late in May. Two of the district's schools, Salem Hills and Hilltop Elementary, could face sanctions under the No Child Left Behind Act if the schools fail to make Adequate Yearly Progress on the tests this year. 

The Simley High School dance team last weekend. More than 70 people participated in the event, and organizers say the tournament may have raised roughly $5,000 to support the team.

at the 2011 Minnesota State High School League Adapted Bowling state tournament. Abby Cochran, a junior, claimed the girls’ Physically Impaired division individual state title. Her teammate, seventh-grader Kayla Wamsted, finished second, giving Simley the top two finishers in the state. Another Spartan, eighth-grader China Lamar, finished fifth in the Cognitively Impaired division.

Since the golf industry cooled off in the early 2000s, —in 2010 the course had a $389,000 net asset loss. The numbers have concerned several city officials, who are looking for a way to relieve the debt the course is still paying for its construction. Selling two parcels of land may be the answer, some city officials say.

Patch the cutting ceremony for the Rock Island Swing Bridge on Wednesday, producing several videos of speakers at the event. Politicians, city staff, and members of the community turned out on Wednesday evening to see Mayor George Tourville cut the ribbon on the 670-foot swing bridge, which has been converted into a fishing pier and recreational platform.

Earlier this week, for the 2011 Minnesota High School Track and Field State Championships. The junior competed in the 300-meter hurdles late last week. Check back at Patch early this week to see photos and results from the event.

More than within the next few days, thanks to a possible state government shutdown. But that's just the tip of the iceberg if the state fails to pass a budget and no alternative solutions are reached to keep Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system operating. In that situation, all the college's staff and faculty will face temporary layoffs, Inver Hills spokesperson Helen Ebert said.

Simley High School's class of 2011 held its at Simley Auditorium in Inver Grove Heights on Friday evening. It was a festive occasion, and Simley's gymnasium was filled with cheering families. Simley's Wind Ensemble provided music during the ceremony and the Spartan Choir sang, "You'll Never Walk Alone." High school staff, student speakers and a Simley alumnus, District 39B Rep. Joe Atkins (DFL), addressed the audience.
