Patch Picks: Celebrate Earth Day

Friday, April 22 is Earth Day; here are a few ideas on how you can help spruce up our planet or just enjoy nature's treasures.

Lebanon Hills Regional Park Earth Day Celebration
Pitch in and  help clean up this popular Dakota County  park from 10am to 2pm. If you fill a trash bag, you will receive a coupon good for a free one-hour canoe or kayak rental this summer. Bring a lunch and have a picnic from noon to 1pm or enjoy refreshments at the Visitor Center. Other events during the afternoon include a raffle, fitness walks, hands-on kids activities and live music around the campfire.  For more information, call the Lebanon Hills Visitor Center at 651-554-6530.

Visit Inver Grove Heights Parks
After the long winter, there is bound to be some garbage that  needs attention at local parks. Bring a trash bag and see what you can do to help make Ernster Park, Oakwood Park, Sleepy Hollow Park or any of the other local Inver Grove Heights parks beautiful again. Be a good citizen!

Como Zoo Party for the Planet: Cats and Kilowatts
Bring the family to this popular St. Paul zoo for their annual Earth Day event, sponsored by Xcel Energy. Find out how to save energy, money and the planet; see the animals, meet the zookeepers, enjoy games, contests and more. 10am to 4pm April 22-24. For more information, call 651-487-8200.

It's not too soon to start thinking about "greening" your yard and garden for spring. Ask the experts at Gertens for tips to get you started! 10am to 4pm on April 22-23.

Dodge Nature Center: Time for Turtles
Preschoolers ages 3 to 5 can get up close and personal with turtles during this "Woolly Bears" event at Dodge Nature Center in West. St. Paul. Stories, music, puppets and more about their favorite hard-shelled friends. Children must be accompanied by an adult. 10am to 11:30am on April 23. Pre-registration is required.
