Its All in the Details
Coaches have been able to work on a lot of important concepts during this "no pads" week. One of the drills was a pursuit drill.
Defensive players raced in pursuit of a ball carrier towards the sidelines. The coaches were teaching "angles of pursuit."
As players become faster and stronger, it is important to arrive at the ball carrier in position to make a solid tackle. If our players do not have a proper angle at the running back, the running back can throw the tackler off and continue to gain yards.
The pursuit drill lets players learn to calculate speed, distance and the correct angles to arrive in position to tackle.
Its a productive use of the player's time, especially when the weather allows many repetitions.
