Update: Nation-Leading Job Figures, Target, Gun Safety & the Canterbury Deal

Some good news on the jobs and budget front, an update on the new Target store and a hot local gun issue are topics in this update.

There's some good news on the jobs and budget front. I also have an update on the new Target store and a hot local gun issue, and I'm seeking input on the Canterbury Park deal.

GOOD NEWS ON JOBS. Only six states now have lower jobless rates than Minnesota's 5.6% unemployment rate, according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The national unemployment rate is 8.1%. The Midwest is leading the nation in getting people back to work.

STATE BUDGET TURNAROUND CONTINUES. In yet another good economic sign, the Minnesota Management and Budget Office reported recently that tax revenues coming into the State are $148 million higher than expected. We didn't raise tax rates to collect more money. The additional revenues are coming in because consumers are spending more, leading to higher sales and corporate income tax collections.

HOTTEST LOCAL ISSUE. The most debated issue locally is whether to allow a DNR-sponsored gun safety program on DarVan Acres in southern Inver Grove. Notably, the DNR and the State are not trying to force this gun safety program on our community, but are simply looking to be a helpful partner, if it is something the community finds beneficial, workable and desirable. IGH Patch has a good article and poll on the issue: .

TARGET. The most recent information I have heard is that the new Target store at 80th and Robert will open on or about July 27th. This is probably the most frequent question I get around town these days.

CANTERBURY PARK DEAL. What do you think of Canterbury Park ending its pursuit of a "Racino," in exchange for $75 million from the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community and Mystic Lake casino? That question, plus a question about a NASCAR track in the metro area, are posted at www.facebook.com/State.Rep.Joe.Atkins. Please weigh in.

I appreciate input on these and other issues, either by commenting below, emailing me at Rep.Joe.Atkins@house.mn, or giving me a call at the Capitol at 296-4192. Have a happy Father's Day weekend!
