Blog: Whatever happened to “May the BEST candidate win”?

How have we, the people, let our political system go from one without political parties to a system where two parties have a stranglehold on the everyday person?

Thanks to the Democrats and Republicans and the corporations they serve, the everyday person feels like they only have two options at the polls, to vote Democrat or Republican. Why? How is it that so many smaller democratic countries have true multiparty system, with multiple major political parties and yet the US only has two major national parties? Why is it that so many people feel that by not voting for a major party is a wasted vote.

The Democrats, Republicans and the major corporations that fund them, want you to feel this way. Through decades of PR and rhetoric, we have been let to believe that there are only two choices. Where has this gotten us to? No where! Most of us know that, especially in the past few years, many things have not been accomplished or not done so in a timely fashion, due not to whether a bill, law or other thing is good or bad, but because of bi-partisanship. “We the party” has become the mantra.

Do I have answers to many of these questions, no not really; I have only identified the problem. The solution is bigger than I. However, this is my suggestion to you: Educate yourself, look at ALL of the candidates and vote for the individual who you believe will best represent you in his or her political body. Forget the Democrats and Republicans; you don’t need to be on a winning side. Should you choose to vote for a 3rd party candidate, remember this, the more votes that the major parties DON’T get, the more those parties are going to see a problem with the political system they have created over the decades.
