Feed My Starving Children

Feed My Starving Children

One of my duties as the IGH Little Princess, is to complete two community service projects.  For one of them, I organized a group of my friends to volunteer with me at Feed My Starving Children.  My parents, my grandma and my sister also volunteered.  When we got there, we started with an orientation to learn more about Feed My Starving Children.  The food goes to places like Hiati, Nicaragua, Phillipines and Zimbabwe and is designed to be easy-to-prepare and to help severely malnourished children get the nutrients they need.  When orientation was over, we all put our hair nets on, washed our hands and were ready to get to get to work assembling the food packages.  We assembled packages of food called MannaPack Rice.  There were four different ingredients that we added to the packages: vitamins/flavoring, dehydrated vegetables, soy nuggets and rice.  We also weighed and sealed the packages, and packed them in boxes.  My dad worked in the warehouse loading the boxes on the pallets. Each package needed to weigh between 380 and 400 grams.  Every time the weight was exactly 390 grams, we yelled out "Bingo".  We worked really fast and packed many boxes of food. When our two hour shift was up, we cleaned up our work station and met back in the orientation room to find out how much food we packed.  We were told that our group and the other groups participating during our shift packed about 110 boxes of food.  Each box had 36 packages of food, and each package contained six meals.  That means we packed about 23,760 meals, enough to feed 68 children for a year!  We had a lot of fun and it felt great knowing that we were able to help feed starving children.  I'm so thankful to my friends and family for joining me in this service project and making it so much fun!
