Amick Formally Charged in IGH Shooting; Bail Set at $1 Million

Justin Thadeus Amick, 39, of West St. Paul is accused of firing shots at two Inver Grove Heights Police officers on Sunday.

A 39-year-old West St. Paul man accused of firing shots at Inver Grove Heights Police officers on Sunday was formally charged with the crime Tuesday.

According to a press release from the Dakota County Attorney’s Office, Justin Thadeus Amick was charged Tuesday with one count each of first-degree attempted murder (intent to kill a peace officer), second-degree attempted murder, second-degree assault and ineligible person in possession of a firearm.

Amick made his first appearance in Dakota County District Court at noon today. District Court Judge Jerome Abrams set Amick’s bail at $1 million without conditions, $500,000 with conditions.

Amick was being held at the Dakota County Jail this afternoon, according to the jail website.

“This was a direct threat to the lives of two police officers,” Dakota County District Attorney James Backstrom says in the press release. “We are thankful that neither of these officers or others in the area were not struck by this gunfire.”

According to police and media reports, Amick is accused of firing a number of shots at police officers from a parked car in the area of River Road and 77th Street around 5 a.m. Sunday morning. Neither of the officers on the scene was injured.

Amick’s next court appearance is set for May 8, 2012 at 9:00 a.m. in Hastings.
