IGH Teen To Serve 60 Days For Strangling Girlfriend

Devonte Thomas Love, 19, was given 60 days in jail for his crimes instead of a maximum three-year prison term.

 

A 19-year-old Inver Grove Heights man was sentenced to 60 days in county jail Tuesday afternoon after pleading guilty to felony domestic assault by strangulation and misdemeanor minor consumption.

Devonte Thomas Love was also charged with gross misdemeanor domestic assault for a subsequent domestic assault but Judge Thomas McCarthy dismissed that charge in exchange for Love's guilty plea.

Love was given credit for 29 days served in Dakota County Jail and Judge McCarthy ran his sentences concurrently, so the remainder of time Love will serve is 31 days.

Had he been given the maximum sentence for the domestic assault charge, Love would have spent three years in prison and been ordered to pay a $5,000 fine.

, police say Love showed up to his girlfriend's home intoxicated and, when she asked him to leave, he refused and a fight ensued.

According to the criminal complaint, Love pulled the woman's hair, punched her in the face and tightened his arm around her neck.

Shortly after police arrived, they located Love behind a nearby building and arrested him. 

According to Love's criminal file, he was convicted of fifth-degree assault in February 2011 in Ramsey County.
