Inver Hills Building Shut Down After Discovery of Suspicious Envelope

Police say the envelope contained powder that was later ruled "not hazardous," according to a Star Tribune report.

A building at Inver Hills Community College was sealed off by emergency responders yesterday, after officials discovered a suspicious envelope containing an unidentified powder.

Inver Grove Heights police responded to the school just before 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, according to a Star Tribune report, after a school employee opened the letter, which contained a dark brown powder.

In addition to the police, the 55th Civilian Support Team, a Minnesota National Guard unit, closed down the building and limited people's exposure to the room where the letter was opened, the report said. That team later determined that the dark brown powder was not hazardous, according to Inver Grove Heights Police Department Lt. Sean Folmar, who was quoted by the Star Tribune.

The letter contained a "harassing" message that may have been meant for someone on the school's faculty, according to the report. Police have not identified any suspects, but are working with the FBI, because the letter came through the U.S. mail.
