UPDATED: Meet Your Local Emergency Responders: Night to Unite Scheduled For Aug. 2

Free CPR training and visits from police, fire and city staff officials are part of this year's neighborhood crime and drug prevention event.

Next Tuesday is going to be a busy night for the local police and fire departments.

That's because city staff and emergency responders are going to be out visiting with community members as part of the annual Night to Unite crime and drug use prevention event.

As part of the event, more than 30 neighborhoods and organizations are hosting a variety of special events, including block parties, cookouts, youth activities and anti-crime rallies. Those events will be highlighted by visits from the Inver Grove Heights Police and Fire Departments or from elected officials and other city staff.

“Night to Unite was developed for communities to get to know one another in their neighborhood, to try and build neighborhood involvement and bring police and the communities together, and to bring awareness of crime prevention,” Inver Grove Heights Interim Police Chief Larry Stanger said.

Dakota County Heart Restart, in partnership with the Inver Grove Heights Fire Department, will offer free, 20-minute CPR classes at Night to Unite events organized by local groups. If that isn't enough, the Inver Grove Heights Parks and Recreation Department is also offering to bring games, activities and freebies to neighborhood gatherings, depending on the size of the event and the space available.

The annual event has a real impact on crime in the community, according to Stanger, because it draws neighbors closer together. For example, Stanger said, neighbors who are able to recognize each other's vehicles are more likely to notice when a strange or suspicious vehicle is in the neighborhood.

Last year, there were roughly 40 Night to Unite events city-wide, Stanger said.
