Armed Homeless Man on Bike Arrested in Shorewood

Police say Jared Anthony Hevey had a reportedly stolen handgun in his backpack when he was arrested in Shorewood.

A homeless man who was apparently sleeping on a mattress in a Tonka Bay garage has been charged with burglarizing the house next door, stealing a piggy bank and a handgun.

Jared Anthony Hevey, 20, is charged with second-degree burglary, which carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a $20,000 fine, and receiving a stolen firearm, which has a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison and a $100,000 fine. Both charges are felonies.

According to the criminal complaint, signed by South Lake Minnetonka Police Detective Christina Chapman, police were called to a home in the 4700 block of Manitou Road in Tonka Bay at 9:30 p.m. July 29 on a report of a residential burglary.

The homeowner told police that she had left home about 4:30 p.m., and when she returned at 8 p.m., she noticed that a handgun and a plastic piggy bank were missing from her bedroom.

Police searched the area and found Hevey sleeping on a mattress in the garage of the home next door. He denied seeing anything unusual, but told officers that he had seen the victim leave her house earlier in the day.

The owner of that home told police that Hevey used to date her daughter and live in her home; she said she allows him to keep some property in the garage.

The next afternoon, a South Lake Minnetonka police officer saw Hevey riding a bicycle on County Road 19 in Shorewood. The officer was aware of an outstanding arrest warrant charging Hevey with violating a protection order, and he arrested Hevey.

When the officer searched Hevey, he found the stolen handgun in his backpack, according to the complaint.

Hevey remains in the Hennepin County Jail on a $40,000 bond. An omnibus hearing in his case is scheduled Aug. 29 in Hennepin County District Court.
