At Least One Shot Fired at Inver Grove Heights Police; Two People in Custody

Felony charges are pending against a 39-year-old Inver Grove Heights man and 47-year-old Brandon, Minn., woman.

Editor's note: A previous version of this story, based on information on the Dakota County Jail website, said one of the two suspects was facing a murder charge. Inver Grove Heights Police said this morning that no officer was killed, and the jail website has been updated to indicate that the pending charge will be attempted murder.

A 39-year-old West St. Paul man and a 47-year-old Brandon, Minn., woman remained in custody Monday, accused of firing at least one shot at Inver Grove Heights Police officers Sunday morning.

A news release issued Sunday by Inver Grove Heights Police said officers responded to a report of possible gunshots in the area of 77th Street and River Road just before 5 a.m.

When they arrived, they found a vehicle they presumed to be unoccupied. As officers approached, one or two shots were fired from the car, which then sped away from the scene.

The shots did not strike the officers, police said.

Police reportedly found a gun at the scene and recovered the car involved in the incident shortly after the incident.

Police arrested two suspects—Justin Thadeus Amick and Michelle Lee Schaefer—in the incident shortly after 6 a.m. Sunday, according to the Dakota County Jail records.

Three felony charges—first-degree attempted murder of a police officer, use of deadly force against a police officer and possession of a weapon by a convicted felon—and an unrelated misdemeanor charge of contempt of court for failing to pay court-ordered child support are pending against Amick, according to jail records. Two felonies—use of deadly force against a police officer and aiding an offender—are pending against Schaefer.

Amick was being held in the Dakota County Jail Monday morning awaiting formal charging. Schaefer was being boarded in the Ramsey County Jail.

The two suspects are scheduled to make their first appearance in Dakota County District Court on Tuesday.
