Politics in Minnesota and the Capitol Report have announced that Rep. Joe Atkins (D) has won a 2013 Leaders in Public Policy award in the Public Policy Achievement category.
Atkins, along with State Senator Tony Lourey, is receiving the award for authoring legislation on the Minnesota Health Insurance Exchange. Before becoming law, the bill went through 18 committees, with hundreds of hours of committee hearings.
A program recognizing honorees will be held Thursday, July 11 at the St. Paul Hotel, 4-7 p.m. The event is sponsored by the law firm Best & Flanagan.

First elected to the Minnesota House in 2002, Atkins represents Inver Grove Heights and parts of Mendota Heights, Eagan and Sunfish Lake.
