UPDATED: Inver Grove Heights City Council, School Board Preview

The council is expected to discuss two business expansions, while the School Board will convene to talk about renewing its levy.

The Inver Grove Heights City Council and the District 199 School Board are holding public meetings on Monday night. Here's a preview of some of the agenda items for both groups:

City Council

  • Council members are expected to approve the purchase of a home at 6556 Doffing Avenue for $175,000. Over several decades, the city has purchased nearly two dozen private properties in the flood plain along Doffing Avenue  as part of a flood mitigation project. One half of the funding will come from a grant from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, while the remainder will be paid through a community development block grant and the city's own general fund.
  • The City Council may approve a rate change at Veterans Memorial Community Center to give active military personnel a larger discount. Under the current rates, active military members must pay $49 for a single monthly pass. If the new rates are approved, they would pay just $43 for the same pass.
  • The council is expected to approve the description of a new assistant fire chief position. The assistant chief would be responsible for managing the technical operations of the fire department, assisting the chief with long-range planning and supervising emergency operations, among other duties. No one has yet been hired for the position, the creation which was approved as part of the 2011 budget adoption.
  • The council may also approve conditional use permits for an 860-square-foot expansion to Inver Grove Hyundai's facilities and the expansion and remodeling of a vacant gas station at the corner of 57th Street and Carmen Avenue.

  • School Board members are expected to begin a preliminary conversation about renewing one of the district's two levies, which generates roughly  $480 in per-pupil funding annually — or $2 million each year for Inver Grove Heights schools. The levy is set to expire at the end of the 2012-2013 school year. A levy referendum could be put to voters as early as November.
