Inver Grove Heights City Council, School Board Preview

The City Council may create a new emergency management organization, while the school board is expected to vote on budget reduction proposals.

The Inver Grove Heights City Council and the District 199 School Board are both holding public meetings on Monday night. Here's a preview of the agendas for both groups.

  • After discussing more than 20 budget reduction proposals at its Feb. 28 meeting, the school board is expected to vote whether to approve the cuts. District administrators believe the proposals, if approved, could save the schools roughly $576,000 in the 2011-12 school year. The district faces as much as a roughly $1 million budget deficit next year. The budget cuts include reducing or eliminating a total of 12 full-time equivalent staff positions within the district.

  • The Inver Grove Heights City Council is expected to vote whether to amend the city's emergency management code. The "significant changes" proposed to the code would create a city-wide emergency management organization under the supervision and control of a director appointed by the mayor.
  • The council is also expected to hold a public hearing for a proposed, $4.3 million street reconstruction project in the South Grove neighborhood of Inver Grove Heights. The construction would include portions of Dawn Avenue, 69th Street E. and Delaney Avenue, among other streets. The council is expected to vote to approve the project on Monday. If approved,  construction could begin as early as this summer.
  • The council may authorize a roughly $20,000 contract with a firm to survey city parks. An increasing number of private property owners have built improvements or encroachments on city-owned parkland. Having the parks surveyed would help the city define property lines, in its effort to have the encroachments removed.
  • The council is also expected to vote whether to approve business licenses for two new therapeutic massage businesses. Both of the new businesses would be located on Cahill Avenue.
