VIDEO: Rock Island Swing Bridge Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

Politicians, city staff, and members of the community turned out on Wednesday evening to see Mayor George Tourville cut the ribbon on the 670-foot swing bridge.

City officials and local legislators charted the long history of the Rock Island Swing Bridge and thanked all those involved in the bridge's restoration during an 45-minute-long ribbon cutting ceremony on Wednesday evening.

District 39B Rep. Joe Atkins (DFL), District 39 Sen. Jim Metzen (DFL), Mayor George Tourville, Dakota County Commissioner Nancy Schouweiler and others all spoke during the ceremony.

Originally a 1,600-foot span across the Mississippi River, the Rock Island Swing Bridge was converted into a 670-foot fishing pier and recreational platform as part of a $2.3 million restoration. The structure will eventually be connected to Heritage Village Park and the Mississippi River Regional Trail trailhead facilities, both of which are under development. The bridge was built in 1894.
