Caitlyn Russell of IGH Wins Athena Award

The female student-athlete will be honored at a mid-April event.

Inver Grove Heights student Caitlyn Russell has earned a 2013 Athena Award.

She is among 39 young women from St. Paul and its surrounding suburbs who will be honored for their athletic achievements at a ceremony next month.

Russell, a student at Cretin-Derham Hall, is a three-sport athlete, excelling in hockey, soccer, and lacrosse.

Among her achievements:

  • Lettered all four years in all three sports.
  • Captain in all three sports
  • Soccer MVP
  • All-state in soccer

Away from athletics, Russell is a Jeremiah Program volunteer and she has won an academic excellence award.

She plans to attend University of Wisconsin Eau-Claire.

Caitlyn is the daughter of Mike and Carrie Russell of Inver Grove Heights.

Event

The students will be honored at the St. Paul Area Athena Awards ceremony at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 17, at the Prom Center, 484 Inwood Ave. N., in Oakdale.

The keynote speaker for the St. Paul event is Rachel Blount, sports reporter and columnist for the Star Tribune.KARE 11 anchor Randy Shaver will again emcee this year’s ceremony, honoring each young woman and her specific achievements.

Now in its 19th year, the Athena Awards honor female athletes for their dedication and excellence in sports. The Athena Awards Committee is comprised of representatives of St. Paul city and suburban schools, parents of previous award winners, and business volunteers.
