Exceptional Educator: Rebecca Ney

Ms. Ney comes to Inver Grove Heights as a first-year English teacher at Simley High School.

School districts go through a lot of changes every year. Veteran teachers retire, some switch districts and some are bright-eyed and bushy-tailed right out of college.

In an effort to keep Inver Grove Heights parents up to date on who is heading up local classrooms, we're lauching our newest featureExceptional Educator.

Each week we'll try to introduce one new teacher to the community. If your child raves about him or her or if you've had a great conference or interaction with that particular teacher, let folks know in the comment stream.

Rebecca Ney: Last year, I student taught at Como Park High School in the Fall and then was a long term substitute in the Spring at Como Park. I am new to teaching so this is my first full year of teaching.

Patch: What do you feel is the best part of your job?

Ney: The best part of my job is to see the progress and development students make in the classroom. I enjoy engaging students in reading and writing and pushing them beyond what they think they are capable of.

Patch: What is your proudest teaching moment?

Ney: My proudest teaching moment was when I worked with a student who had been struggling in my class. We worked together after school on a paper. The student had to provide examples of irony from the short story The Story of an Hour by Kate Chopin. The student worked very hard and completed a clear descriptive essay beyond what he/she thought he/she could do.

Patch: What do you hope to bring to your IGH classroom?

Ney: I hope to provide students with engaging lesson plans that incorporate movement. I am hoping to get students up and acting out the last act of The Crucible. Students learn the thoughts, feelings, and development of major characters if they are able to experience the character through acting.

Patch: If you left teaching tomorrow, what profession would you go into? Why?

Ney: I honestly just landed my dream job. I am teaching and also coaching swimming. It is a unique opportunity that I am so happy to be a part of.
