Simley Theatre Guild's "Cinderella" Takes the Stage Tonight

Music, dance and comedy reign as Rodgers and Hammerstein's "Cinderella" debuts on April 14 at Simley High School

It's going to be a close call as to who will to enjoy the Simley High School production of "Cinderella" more — the cast and crew, or audience members.

The Simley Theatre Guild will present four performances of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s "Cinderella," beginnning on Thursday, April 14, and running through Sunday, April 17. All performances are scheduled for 7:30pm at the Simley Auditorium, with the exception of the April 17 performance, which will be held at 3pm.

The classic musical is based on one of the world’s most popular fairytales, and is filled with memorable music, dancing, vivid costumes, lots of slapstick humor and compelling drama.

"It's charming, it's cute, it's funny and it's magic," enthused director Rudd Rayfield. "It's a lot of fun, nobody has seen it for a while and it's a crowd-pleaser. Cinderella is the most popular story in the world."

One of the show's most magical moments, cast members say, is the ball dance scene between the prince and Cinderella, which is accompanied by the musical piece "Ten Minutes Ago, I Saw You."

"I like it because I get to waltz and sing at the same time," said Loren Bushyhead, who plays the titular role of Cinderella. "That's something I've never gotten to do."

Cinderella and the prince are the obvious leads, but don't be surprised to see the stepmother and the stepsisters try to steal the limelight during the humorous musical, Rayfield and others said.

"It's known as the stepsisters musical,"  said Hannah Forrest, who plays one of the stepsisters. "We're the main element of comedy and it kind of follows the story."

The third act, where Cinderella her stepmother and stepsisters decribe the ball, is a highlight, Forrest said. "For me its just so funny and I like performing it a lot," she added.

"I honestly think of this as the stepsisters show," said Rayfield. "Cinderella and the prince are pretty and sing pretty songs, but the stepsisters steal the show at times."

The show is the third production of Simley's Theatre Guild's 18th season. Ticket prices are $7 for adults, $5 for students and seniors, and $3 for children under 12.  For more information, or to reserve seats, call 651-306-7144.
