Hilltop Elementary's Vogel Semifinalist for Teacher of the Year

Steve Vogel is one of 34 teachers still in the running for the Minnesota teaching honor.

A Hilltop Elementary School music teacher is a semifinalist for this year’s Minnesota Teacher of the Year Award.

Steve Vogel was one of three District 199 teachers—the others were Rick Olson of Inver Grove Heights Middle School and Ben Peine of Pine Bend Elementary School—named to the initial list of 111 candidates for Teacher of the Year.

That list was reduced to 34 semifinalists last week, and Vogel’s name was on that list.

Education Minnesota, the union that represents 70,000 teachers statewide, organizes and underwrites the state’s teacher of the year program.

According to an Education Minnesota press release, a 22-member committee of community leaders selected the semifinalist, which were announced March 1. Later this month, the committee will pick 10 or so finalists.

The Teacher of the Year recipient will be announced May 6 during a ceremony in Brooklyn Park.
