Inver Grove Heights Schools to Remain Closed Tuesday

The cold weather prompted a second day of school closures in the district.

Inver Grove Heights Schools will remain closed a second day because of the extremely cold temperatures, the district announced Monday.

All classes, activities, kids' choice and community education classes will also be canceled.

Unlike Monday’s closure, which was part of a statewide closure that the governor ordered, Tuesday’s closure was a district decision. Earlier in the day, the Minnesota Department of Education announced that there would not be a statewide closure.

“Governor Dayton is leaving the decision about school cancellations for Tuesday to individual school districts. We believe school superintendents are monitoring the temperatures closely and are prepared to communicate with families so they can plan accordingly,” Education Commissioner Brenda Cassellius wrote in a message to school superintendents and charter school directors. “We encourage you, as always, to be mindful about the dangers of even brief exposure to these dangerously low temperatures as you make your decisions. I am grateful for your efforts on behalf of Minnesota children, not only during this challenging week, but every day.”

Forecasters predict Tuesday’s high will be -1 degrees Fahrenheit, with wind chill values as low as -35 degrees.
