Inver Hills Community College, Metro State Profs Team up for Sandy Hook Orchard

The Pioneer Press reports Barbara Curchack of Inver Hills and August Hoffman of Metro State will head to Newtown in less than two months.

Barbara Cuchack and August Hoffman, each professors at local colleges, will get a life lesson of their own in October as they fly to Newtown, CT, for a special planting of a brand new orchard.

The 30-tree orchard, according to the Associated Press, is part of a 200-acre "victory garden" that is being established to remember the more than 20 people killed at Sandy Hook Elementary last year.

Curchack and Hoffamn have worked together the last few growing seasons on a community garden on the Inver Hills Community College Campus.

According to TwinCities.com, the garden has seen 300 students get their hands dirty working to raise more than 1,500 pounds of fresh food, all of which was donated to local food shelves

Six students will join the two professors, both psychology teachers at their schools, on the trip.

The Fruit Tree Planting Foundation will donate the trees.

Students aiming to join along on the trip are raising money via the Inver Hills College site. Donations should be designated to the "Sandy Hook Victory Garden" and can be made online. It is the last category in the 'drop-down' menu.
