ISD 199 Partners with Dakota County to Improve Recycling, Reduce Costs

Dakota County provided nearly 700 recycling and trash containers at no cost to the district and offered other services.

Editor's Note: This is a press release from Inver Grove Heights Community Schools.

Last summer, ISD 199 entered into an agreement with Dakota County Environmental Management that was designed to increase the amount of recycling in the district and reduce waste disposal costs. Dakota County provided nearly 700 recycling and trash containers at no cost to the district and offered other services such as waste sort analysis, audits and environmental curriculum materials to bring recycling education into the classroom.

The new trash and recycling containers are designed to offer districtwide consistency so that recycling is intuitive and as easy as possible. Trash and recycling containers have been paired in all locations to make it easy to choose recycling, versus throwing a recyclable item in the trash because the recycling container is farther away or in an unknown location. The containers are also labeled with color codes, writing and pictures, so that it’s more difficult to throw the wrong item in a container.

Every item placed in a recycling container is one less item placed in the trash, which results in fewer items in landfills, less pollution and lower waste management costs for the district.  Students and staff who bring this behavior home will multiply the positive benefits to the environment.

The district plans to implement additional recycling efforts during the year that will involve staff, students and the community, including educational programs, tours of local waste and recycling facilities, working with waste vendors and much more.
