Photos: Simley Wrestlers Grab Fifth Straight State Crown

If it seems familiar, it's because it is.

The Simley Spartans wrestling team and state titles seem to fit like a glove. And with the completion of their fifth straight Class AA state title Thursday night with a 36-22 win over Scott West, the Spartans are going to need a new hand next year if the dynasty continues.

Simley finishes the season with a 28-3 record. Their three losses all came during a holiday tournament to national powers in December. The Spartans are currently ranked No. 11 nationally.

After dominating sections by a combined 240-0 in three matches, the Spartans found some stiffer competition on the Xcel Energy Center mats during the state tournament.

But a 44-17 win over Milaca/Faith Christian in the quarterfinal and a 47-20 win over perrennial power Kasson-Mantorville in the semi-final set up a rematch of last year's state championship pairing. 

Simley defeated Scott West 36-19 last year to win their fourth straight state title.

Simley has 12 wrestlers competing in the individual state tournament which runs today and Saturday, also at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.
