Simley's Jake Short Named Pioneer Press Wrestler of the Year

Short has had an undefeated 41-0 senior year at Simley.

Naming Simley High School senior Jake Short "Wrestler of the Year" must not have been a difficult decision for the Pioneer Press.

Looking to win his fourth individual state championship on Saturday, Short is the nation's top-ranked 152-pounder sitting on a 75-match winning streak.

Before he enrolls at the University of Minnesota in the fall, Short plans on taking a break from wrestling and trying to reach the state tournament in tennis.

"I think I need the break and have earned the time off from wrestling," Short told the Pioneer Press. "I'm a three-sport guy but soon will become a one-sport guy. I want to refresh my body and mind before I hit the mat again in college."

Short is part of a Simley wrestling dynasty—his father, Will, is head coach at Simley, his uncles won multiple state championships in their school days and his grandfather, Jim, led Simley to four state team championships.

"I'm extremely proud of that young man," Jim Short told the paper. "I knew he would be a national-caliber wrestler, but he has had tremendous pressure on him. The expectations can be overwhelming sometimes."
