Sports Roundup: Jan. 23. 2012

Catch up with Simley High School athletic teams.

Boys Swimming and Diving: The swimming and diving team placed in the top 10 in the State at True Team State on Saturday, Jan. 21.

Medal winners were: Alec Kandt was the 2012 True Team State champion in the 100 butterfly and took second in the 100 breaststroke; Tim Luhr placed eighth in the 200 freestyle and fifth in 500 freestyle; Carter Lange placed secondin the 1-meter dive; Nathan Stone placed sixth in the 1-meter dive. The team of Mike Ausen, Tim Luhr, Kandt and Ryan Kimble took fourth in the 400 free relay.

The Spartans next meet is "Senior Night" Jan. 24 at the Grove at 6 p.m. against Orono.

Girls Basketball: The Spartans are undefeated in their last six games. The most recent victory was over Hill-Murray on Jan. 20. The final score of the Classic Suburban matchup was 59-56. Simley is leading the conference with a 4-0 record, the same as Jan. 27 opponent - Richfield. Hill-Murray is third, 1.5 games behind the leaders.

Simley beat Tartan 66-58 on Jan. 17 and thumped Henry Sibley on Jan. 10. 78-60.

Kylie Brown is the team's top rebounder with 187 on the season and Abby Kain is the leading the team in points per game - an average of 13.1, with 209 total points this season.

Wrestling: In the last three meets, the Simley wrestlers have defeated seven teams.

In the Jan. 12 triangular, South St. Paul scored 10 points to Simley's 54 and Tartan managed 9 to Simley's 58.

In the Centennial duals on Jan. 15 the final scores were 43-27 against Roseville Area, 53-9 over St. Francis and 49-15 against Centennial.

On Jan. 19 in a triangular with Mahtomedi and St. Thomas the Spartans left with a season record of 18-3 beating both teams. Mahtomedi scored 9 points to Simley's 70 while Simley shut out St. Thomas 69-0.

Eight of the matches were won by forfeit against St. Thomas and the other four wins included pins by Dale Barner (160 pounds), Juan Torres (132 pounds) and Zach Spychalla (120 pounds.)

The next meet is on Jan. 26 at Henry Sibley High School.

Boys Hockey: The boy's hockey team is 1-1 in its last two games. On Jan. 19 the team beat Richfield 4-2 and on Jan. 21 fell to South St. Paul 0-3.

In the win over Richfield Brandon Reitberger had two goals while Ben Rauschnot and Will Knopik each had one.

The team's overall record is 13-4 and the next game is on Jan. 26 against Mahtomedi.

Girls Hockey: With an 11-7 record so far this season, the girls hockey team lost to Hill-Murray 2-7 on Jan. 16 and beat Mahtomedi 1-0 on Jan. 20.

Sydney Knutson had the lone goal 50 seconds into the second period in the win over Mahtomedi.

In the loss to Hill-Murray, Simley started the game ahead when Lacy-Rae Kettner scored in the first period, but Hill-Murray's next three goals went unanswered until Kettner scored again in the second period. Hill-Murray scored four more goals in the game before the final buzzer.

The team's next match up is against North St. Paul on Jan. 24.

Boys Basketball: The Spartans beat St. Paul Harding 80-65 on Jan. 20. Guard John Spillane scored the most points, 19, with Verneal Baxter adding 16 of his own.

The night before the game didn't end in their favor when they fell to Hill-Murray 65-61 on Jan. 19 at home. Spillane was also the top scorer in that game, sinking 14 points.

Their next contest is tomorrow, Jan. 24 against South St. Paul at home at 7 p.m.
