Sports Roundup: Jan. 30, 2012

Catch up with some of your Simley High School sports teams.

Boys Basketball: The boys basketball team won and lost a game in the last week.On Jan. 24 the team beat South St. Paul 74-45. John Spillane sunk 15 of his own followed by Connor Wells with 13 and Verneal Baxter with 11.

The outcome against Richfield was not as good – the Spartans fell 70-79 on Jan. 27. Spillane was again the top point-earner with 21 of his own and Aaron Gartner pitched in another 12.

The team’s overall record is 6-11. The next game is Tuesday, Jan. 31 against Mahtomedi.

Girl’s Basketball: Winless in the last two games, the girl’s basketball team fell to a 15-3 record on the season.

Against South St. Paul the final score was 37-46. Not one scoring team member scored in the double digits; Aejah Lockett had the most, 9, followed by 8 from Abby Kain.

In a conference game against Richfield, Simley was unable to pull ahead and lost 41-66. Kain contributed 17 while Alexis Boyd-Lockett threw up 11 of her own.

The Spartans are no longer conference leaders, falling two games behind Richfield, and are now fourth in the conference. The next game is Tuesday, Jan. 31 against Mahtomedi.

Boys Hockey: A loss and a tie were the outcomes of the last two boys hockey games.

In the Jan. 26 game against Mahtomedi the Spartans were pummeled 2-7. Ben Rauschnot and Pat Short scored the goals in the first and third period, respectively.

Pat Short and Blake Stanton each scored in the second period in the Jan. 28 game against Tartan.

The next game is on Feb. 2 against Dodge Center.

Girls Hockey: Undefeated in the last three games, the girl’s hockey team is 13-7 on the season and third in the Classic Suburban Conference.

A shutout was the result of the . Mackenzie Molnar and Jessica Pate each scored in the first period.

In the win over the St. Paul Blades on Jan. 26 the team was on fire with eight goals to the Blades’ 1. Jessica Pate, Maddie Barry, Nikki Nelson and Lexi Muller each had a goal while Molnar and Laken Muller each chipped in two.

The next game is on Jan. 31 against South St. Paul followed by a Feb. 3 game against Classic Suburban Conference Leader Hill-Murray.

Boys Swimming and Diving: The team was up against Orono on Jan. 24 and lost 82-104.

The next meet is on Jan. 31 against Shakopee. 

Wrestling: With a team record of 18-3 the Spartan wrestlers beat each of the last four teams faced.

The final score of the meet was 58-9 on Jan. 26. In the Swalla Duals the final scores were: Simley: 68 to New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva: 10; Simley: 50 to Sparta 16; Simley: 43 to Kasson-Mantorville: 25.

Gymnastics: The gymnastics team beat South St. Paul on Jan. 26 and has earned a new season record score: 123.875. South St. Paul's scores was 110.575. 

Sarah Birkelo placed secon on floor and in the all around, Sarah Kruse placed third on vault, floor and in the all around. Maggie Kadrlik was second on bars.

The gymnastics team will travel to the Breck Invitational this weekend.
