UPDATED: Seven Candidates in School Board Race

The filing period for the 2011 School Board elections closed at 5 p.m. today.

Another challenger has entered the race for four open seats on the Inver Grove Heights School Board, bringing the total to seven candidates as of late Tuesday afternoon.

Tom Begich, a member of the Inver Grove Heights B.E.S.T. Foundation, filed for the 2011 school board election on Tuesday afternoon. The filing period for the election closed at 5 p.m. on Tuesday.

Begich is the second candidate to file on Tuesday: Allen Gerber also entered the race earlier Tuesday morning.

They join local teacher and HD39B Republicans Chair Mark Westpfahl and incumbent School Board member Bridget Sutton, who both filed for the election on Monday afternoon.

Current board members Keri Myran and Mickey Difronzo and newcomer Maria Abla-Torres, also declared their candidacy for the 2011 election, which will be held on Nov. 8.

Four seats on the school board are up for election this year. Only one School Board incumbent, Phil Prokopowicz, had not yet filed for re-election as of late Tuesday afternoon. Candidates can still withdraw from the race until Aug. 18.
