VIDEO: Salem Hills Students Learn to Garden

With the help of the city of Inver Grove Heights and a national grant from Burpee Home Gardens, Salem Hills Elementary School students got their hands dirty on Wednesday.

Several dozen Salem Hills Elementary School students got a chance to plant tomatoes, eggplant and other vegetables in the community garden at Salem Hills Park on Wednesday morning.

Salem Hills is one of five schools across the nation that received a "I Can Grow" grant from Burpee Home Gardens. The grant — and a partnership between the Inver Grove Heights School District and the city — facilitated the event and enabled the students to learn about gardening.

The grant award, Burpee Home Gardens Marketing Director Diane Hund said, promotes healthy eating, exercise, environmental awareness and economic lessons among students.
