Normally an eighth-place finish in a junior varsity meet isn't all that much to shout about, but that was exactly what brought the Simley High swimmers to their feet Thursday.
Simley seventh grader Justin Briguet finished sixth in the boys 500 yard freestyle in the Classic Suburban Conference boys' swimming and diving junior varsity meet Thursday at Veterans Memorial Community Center in Inver Grove Heights. But is was Briguet's time of 6:07.65 that got the Spartans excited. That time qualifed him for the section meet.
Simley coaches and swimmers lined the sides of the pool to enthusiastically celebrate Briguet's swim.
The Section 1A prelims and finals will be held Thursday, Feb. 24 and Saturday, Feb. 26, at The Grove pool in Inver Grove Heights.
Simley's swimmers and divers had several other good efforts Thursday in the non-scoring meet.
Junior Jack Miklya finished first in the 1 meter diving with a score of 110.40.
Simley's 200 yard freestyle relay team of Zach Park, Michael Omodt-Lopez, Nick Pieper and Cody Roesler were second in 1:53.52.
Briguet was fourth in the 200 freestyle in 2:15.42, Roesler was fourth in the butterfly in 1:18.01, Omodt-Lopex was fourth in the 100 yard backstroke in 1:16.96 and the team of Omodt-Lopez, Pieper, Brandon Kinkade and Michael Modica was fourth in the 200 yard medley relay in 2:12.09.
