Kids ages 5-8 are learning the fundamentals of soccer, thanks to a camp co-hosting by the city's Parks and Recreation Department and the Inver Grove Heights Soccer Association.
The Inver Grove Heights Soccer Association and the city's Parks and Recreation Department are co-hosting a summer soccer camp on Tuesday evenings from 5:30-8:30 p.m. The first few weeks have been held at Veterans Memorial Community Center on artificial turf. They move outdoors next week to Rich Valley Athletic Complex.
The camp is split into two age groups, 5-6 year olds and 7-8 year olds, and each are treated to one-hour sessions. There is a total of about 80 kids in the program. They begin by dividing the kids into three groups and sending them off to one of three stations. The first station is called "1,000 Touches." There, participants work on ball-handling skills. The second station, "Dynamic Warm-Ups," is a form of stretching with constant movement. The last station is "Speed and Agility." After the kids rotate through all the stations, they worked on trapping the ball and wrapped up with a 15-minute scrimmage against each other.
The camp is taught by four coaches, Shelli Streeper, Sami Meyman, McKenna Splett, and Sarah Lose.
