PHOTOS: Spartans Fall at North St. Paul

Simley football scores first, but can not hold off host Polars on their Homecoming night.

The Simley football team could not follow up on its first victory of the season last week with another triumph on Friday as the Spartans lost 22-13 at North St. Paul on the Polars' homecoming night.

Mack Short ran for a 29-yard touchdown late in the first quarter to help give Simley an initial 7-0 lead, but North matched that score with one of its own in the second half as the game went to the break tied at 7-7.

After a scoreless third quarter, the Polars' Mustafa Shabazz gave the home side the lead for good on a touchdown run that was followed up by a two-point conversion to make the count 15-7.

Jake Short then ran for a 60-yard touchdown to pull the Spartans to within two points, but Simley's conversion attempt failed to leave the visitors trailing 15-13 before another Shabazz touchdown late in the frame iced the contest and led to the final nine-point spread.

The Spartans, now 1-3, return home next Friday when they welcome South St. Paul for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
