Simley Baseball Season Ends with Loss to Park Senior High School

The Spartans fell 10-4 in the first-round section match-up with Cottage Grove

Simley High School's 2011 baseball season came to an end Friday on a rainy afternoon with a 10-4 loss to Cottage Grove in the first round of section competitions.

The Spartans got off to a hot start, scoring a run in the top of the first, but Park High School answered in the bottom of the inning with three runs of its own. A fourth inning homerun by Park senior Cory O’Connell put the Wolfpack up 5-1, but the Spartans wouldn’t go down without a fight.

In the top of the fifth Simley’s Conner Lewis and Josh Ketchmark both singled to start the inning. Lewis scored on a base knock by Logan Busch, and Jordan Pedersen walked to load the bases. After Ketchmark scored on a wild pitch, Mike Steinhoff hit an RBI single up the middle to make the game 5-4.

That was as close as the Spartans would come, however. Park pitcher Drew Flack shut down Simley for the rest of the game and the Cottage Grove offense, combined with some defensive miscues by the Spartans, put Park out of reach.

Lewis led the Spartan offense going 2-3 with a walk, a stolen base and two runs scored.
