Simley Boys Lacrosse Team Can't Hang With Hill-Murray

After an even first quarter, Hill-Murray got its game in gear and rocked the Spartans 17-3 in a boys lacrosse Saturday

Simley High School hung with Hill-Murray for a quarter before things suddenly and irrevocably headed south at a Classic Suburban Conference boys lacrosse game on Friday.

Simley trailed just 3-2 after the first quarter, but Hill-Murray (7-1) scored the next 11 goals of the match to take a commanding 14-2 lead en route to a 17-3 decision.

It was the seventh straight win of the season for the Pioneers after an 11-10 season-opening loss to Mahtomedi. Simley (0-7) continues to struggle this lacrosse season.

“The one positive would have been the first quarter,” said Simley head coach Garnet Asmundson. “It was 2-to-1, then it was 3-to-2, probably with about four minutes left in the half, then they got three quick goals. Unfortunately, they were able to take advantage of some things and capitalize on their benefits, and they did some things very well. So give them some credit.”

Asmundson noted the play of Simley goalie Brandon Kinney, who had several good saves.

“He probably would have been the one positive that I saw,” said Asmundson. “He didn’t give up, he battled. He unfortunately had to work very hard the whole game.”

First-quarter goals by Joe Trenzeluk and Zach Park helped the Spartans keep pace with the Pioneers early. But in the second quarter, the Pioneers took over the game, both offensively and defensively. Hill-Murray led 8-3 at the half and 13-2 after three quarters.

Simley’s Kellen Asmundson scored off an assist from Tony Armstrong with 9:13 to play.

Hill-Murray’s Ben Martynec had six goals in the win.

Simley plays at Holy Family Catholic Tuesday at 6 p.m.
