Simley Football Kicks of 2013 Season Against Powerful St. Thomas Academy

The Spartans will look to get above the .500 mark this year, but open the season on a tough note with the defending State 5A runners up.

The Simley Spartans will have to beat the best to be the best...and right out of the gat.
Rex King's Spartans will host St. Thomas Academy, a perennial Prep Bowl favorite from the Classic Suburban Conference, in its football season opener.
That game kicks off at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 29.
Other highlights on the schedule: The Spartans' only home contest this year is against Irondale, set for Sept. 20. The regular season finale is a home contest, too, as Simley hosts Mahtomedi on the traditional Wednesday night.

Here's the complete schedule, with all games at 7 p.m.

Thursday, Aug. 29 - ST. THOMAS ACADEMY
Friday, Sept. 6 - at Tartan
Friday, Sept. 13 - at Hill-Murray
Friday, Sept. 20 - IRONDALE
Friday, Sept. 27 - at Richfield
Friday, Oct. 4 - SIBLEY
Friday, Oct. 11 - at South St. Paul
Wednesday, Oct. 16 - MAHTOMEDI

The Spartans are coming off a 4-6 season where they went 2-5 in the conference. They topped Sibley in the opening round of the 2012 playoffs before falling to state runner-up STA.
St. Thomas is also the defending NCC champion, tying with South St. Paul last year with a 6-1 record.
