Spartans Advance Three Teams, Eight Individuals To Section Swimming Finals

Simley High School's three relay teams all qualified for the Section 1A finals Saturday; Briguet wins 100, Kandt first in the butterfly

Simley High School's swimmers had a big evening in their home pool during the first round of the 2011 Section 1AA boys swimming and diving meet, held Thursday night at Veterans Memorial Community Center. The Spartans advanced all three relay teams and eight individuals into Saturday’s section finals.

Simley’s 200-yard and 400-yard freestyle relay teams swam to the fastest times in the preliminaries, outstroking archrivals St. Thomas Academy in both races.

The team of Alex Jurrens, Alec Kandt, Dan Hardgrave and Nate Briguet won the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:32.56.

Then Simley’s Briguet, Jurrens, Tim Luhr and Kandt won the 400-yard freestyle relay in a season’s best time of 3:24.76.

Sophomore Kandt had a near-perfect preliminary round. In addition to swimming on two winning relays, he won the 100-yard butterfly in 54.95 and was second in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:02.79.

Simley senior Briguet finished first in the 100-yard freestyle (49.94).

Simley senior Jurrens was second in a season best time of 22.69 and classmate Briguet was third (22.84) to qualify for the finals in the boys 50-yard freestyle.

Also qualifying for Simley were the 200-yard medley relay team of Hardgrave, Carter Lange, Michael Greene and Robert Burns. The team qualified seventh in the prelims with a time of 151.61.

Luhr made it in two individual events in his fastest times of the season, finishing seventh in the 200-yard freestyle (1:54.42)  to advance to Saturday’s finals. Luhr also advanced in the 500-yard freestyle with the sixth fastest time of 5:13.36.

 Green had the sixth fastest qualifying time in the 200-yard individual medley (2:10.55).

 The section finals for swimming and diving are scheduled to start at 1pm on Saturday at The Grove Aquatic and Fitness Center in Inver Grove Heights.
